What is the NCLEX-RN?

The NCLEX-RN® is the licensing examination a nurse must pass to practice as a Registered Nurse in the United States (and Canada). It tests safe, effective clinical judgement rather than memorized facts.

  • Computer-adaptive (CAT). The test adjusts to you: answer well and questions get harder; it stops once it is confident whether you pass. Length varies — most candidates answer between about 75 and 150 questions.
  • Next-Gen NCLEX. Newer formats add case studies and questions that test clinical judgement — recognizing cues, prioritizing, and deciding actions.
  • Organized by Client Needs. Safe & effective care, health promotion, psychosocial integrity, and physiological integrity — the topics on this page map to these areas.
  • How to use this page. Read a topic, take its check-in, work through the 20 question sets, then sit an adaptive exam to gauge your readiness.
